First-of-its-kind plant will recycle electric vehicle battery materials, resulting in reduced waste and increased sustainability.
Turner, Kokosing Industrial, and SSOE Team celebrated the topping out of the third building of Ascend Elements’ production facility in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. The 315,000 square foot building will use a specialized process to produce sustainable electric vehicle battery materials using recycled feedstock.
The plant, on a 140-acres site in southwest Kentucky, will be North America’s first manufacturing facility that sustainably produces materials made to precise microstructure specifications for use in electric vehicle batteries.
Tom Manahan, Senior Vice President, Turner Construction Company said, “It is great to be part of a project that has significant economic and carbon-reduction benefits and will have a tremendous impact on our society. We are thrilled to reach this milestone and want to thank the hundreds of trade contractors who worked so hard to get to this point.”
Work began on the project in 2022 and is set to begin operations in Spring 2025. When additional phases on the campus are complete, the facility will produce enough sustainable material for 750,000 electric vehicles per year.
