The transformational project will elevate the travel experience for visitors to the Hawkeye State.
Turner Construction Company, in partnership with joint venture partner The Weitz Company, celebrated the topping out of the $445 million expansion of Des Moines International Airport. The event included a traditional beam signing, honoring the collaborative efforts of the team and the community. Local leaders, project partners, and members of the joint venture joined together to mark this moment.
The expansion project will modernize and significantly enhance the airport, increasing the number of gates from 12 to 18 and transforming the overall traveler experience. Improvements include upgraded security checkpoints, expanded gate operations, advanced baggage handling systems, and new dining and retail options. These upgrades are designed to establish Des Moines as a premier gateway for business and leisure travelers alike.
“This is a very exciting milestone for the entire team and the Des Moines community,” said Zachary Loy, Vice President and General Manager, Turner Construction Company. “This expansion project will not only improve the travel experience but also reflect the city’s growth and vibrancy. We are proud to collaborate with the Des Moines Airport Authority, The Weitz Company, and local stakeholders to create an enhanced gateway that leaves a lasting impression on visitors.”
The first phase of the project, valued at $445 million, is anticipated to be completed in 2026, with subsequent demolition and renovation work continuing through 2027.
