Flatiron Selected for Design-Build Bridge Project in North Carolina

Flatiron Construction Corp. (FLATIRON), one of the largest infrastructure contractors in North America, was named the apparent low bidder from three preselected firms for the Rodanthe Bridge project by the North Carolina Department of Transportation on December 20. The Rodanthe Bridge project is the second phase of the overall Bonner Bridge replacement project.

The $145M project features a 2.4-mile-long bridge that will extend from the southern end of the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, over the Pamlico Sound and into the village of Rodanthe. The future bridge will replace the existing NC 12 roadway and provide a long-term solution for the breach in Rodanthe caused by Hurricane Irene in 2011.
“We’re honored to be selected as the contractor responsible for the new bridge that will provide a safe and permanent connection for residents and visitors to the historic southern Hatteras Island of the Outer Banks,” said Javier Sevilla, chief operating officer.
Flatiron and its designer RK&K will continue with the design phase through 2017, with construction scheduled to begin in early 2018. Project completion is expected in April 2020.
