Cruz earned the International Organization for Standardization certification ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety management systems and ISO 14001 environmental management systems after an independent audit of the company’s systems, processes and objectives. These certifications recognize E.E. Cruz’s commitment to sustainable construction practices on infrastructure projects for all of our clients.

ISO 14001 is an internationally-recognized standard that specifies requirements for an organization to enhance environmental performance and to contribute to sustainability by managing environmental responsibilities in a systematic manner.
Certification encompassed E.E. Cruz’s sustainability commitments as well as the framework to protect the environment and respond to changing environmental conditions in balance with socioeconomic needs.

Examples of E.E. Cruz Sustainable Practices
- NYC Transit Authority, Emergency Ventilation Plant at Rivington & Forsyth Streets, New York City – To be completed in July 2024. This ventilation plant is in a densely- populated urban area and next to a city park. The project team excavated and disposed of contaminated, non-hazardous soil while protecting park infrastructure and deciduous trees.
- Rebuild by Design Hudson River Project, Hoboken, NJ – The resiliency project is designed to protect the area from the next potential Super Storm Sandy. Located along the Hudson River spanning the towns of Hoboken, Weehawken and Jersey City, in New Jersey, our work will also protect the New Jersey Transit and Port Authority Transit train yard. These vital transportation links run into and out of New York City and the surrounding metropolitan area.
ISO 45001 is an internationally-recognized standard that provides a framework for managing health and safety risks and opportunities. This framework includes employee and external stakeholder inputs regarding worker health, safety and well-being. The aim and intended outcomes of the occupational health and safety management system are to prevent work-related injury and ill health to workers and to provide safe and healthy workplaces by eliminating hazards and minimizing risks by taking effective preventive and protective measures.
Certification encompassed the company’s commitment to manage its health and safety risks, improve safety conditions and assist in meeting legal and other requirements.

Health & Safety Commitments
E.E. Cruz is committed to providing:
- Accident-free projects delivered with zero injuries/fatalities of employees or contractors.
- A Lost Time Incident Frequency Rate (LTIFR) of 0.34 by the end of 2025 and 0.18 by the end of 2030.
- 100% of new hires trained on health and safety by the end of 2023.
- Increase contractor training and awareness of health and safety issues by the end of 2025 to lower accident rates.
- 100% of employees covered by Occupational Safety and Health Administration certifications such as ISO 45001.
Focused activities to achieve commitments include, but are not limited to:
- Maintain focus on the reduction of harm through our Serious Injury and Fatality prevention program.
- Educate workers and supervisors on the hazardous energy wheel. (The hazardous energy wheel is a tool created to help employees identify more of the safety hazards encountered at work and potential injuries resulting from unwanted contact with some sort of energy.)
- Effectively and proactively manage cases and return-to-work programs.
- Properly orient, train and mentor all new employees on E.E. Cruz’s safety fundamentals.
- Thoroughly track subcontractor incidents using database tools.
