The anonymous and limited-entry architect competition around what was originally the Royal Railways headquarters (Königliche Eisenbahndirektion Cöln) on Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer in Cologne has now been decided. The eight participating firms of architects had been asked to come up with a modern solution for the reconstruction of the mansard roof - destroyed in the Second World War - which would be in keeping with the building’s historic facade. Out of the entries submitted, a jury comprising representatives of the City of Cologne, illustrious architects and HOCHTIEF Solutions unanimously voted for the concept put forward by Aachen-based firm, kadawittfeldarchitektur. The members of the jury emphasized that the winning entry was a very successful combination of historic structure and modern architecture, and said that the clear-cut design would result in a new, representative building on the Rhine riverbank in Cologne.
The HTP Rhine-Ruhr branch of HOCHTIEF Solutions plans to redevelop the building which is located close to Cologne’s main railway station, with a view of the cathedral and the Rhine, as a premium office property. A building with an area of around 26,000 square meters with office space will be produced to a superior standard. The architectural concept foresees the reconstruction of the mansard roof with a modern design. For this, three regular floors with wraparound terraces are being built. The original shape of the roof is taken as a reference and given a modern interpretation, using horizontal fascia. The striking entrance will be framed by the ten columns of the portico. The facade, which is listed as a historic landmark, will be reconditioned and extensively refurbished, while the imposing, historic lobbies will be integrated, true to the original, into the new-build.
